We Have Lift-off: Sci-Fi Month 2019

IT’S HEEEEEERE!

Welcome, dear Fleet, to Sci-Fi Month 2019! Our course is set and autopilot is on for the moment, so let’s drift a little and get ourselves comfortable. It’s time for me to share my plans for the journey ahead…

To Be Read…

I’ve gone through my book piles, pulled a bunch of enticing titles off the shelves, and … I might have been a bit ambitious. But that’s half the fun! Let’s see how many of these lovelies I can get through in a month (in no particular order)…

  • To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers
  • All Systems Red by Martha Wells
  • Autonomous by Annalee Newitz
  • Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente
  • Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone
  • Before Mars by Emma Newman
  • A Song For a New Day by Sarah Pinsker
  • Fortuna by Kristyn Merbeth
  • Sixteenth Watch by Myke Cole (ARC)

Sci-Fi Month Read-alongs

We’ve got not one, but TWO read-alongs planned for this month! Jorie @joriestory and myself will be hosting a read-along for Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers, across Goodreads and Twitter! Check the link for the schedule info, and follow the Twitter discussion of the book at the #SciFiMonth and #SpacebornFew hashtags!

Note for anyone joining the Twitter Q&As – please remember to use both hashtags when answering questions, to make it easier for us to find your tweets. Be kind to your hosts, we want to get as much chatter going as possible!

And not to be outdone, @imyril has put together a read-along schedule for The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell! I’ll be taking part in this one too, because apparently I’m in a “go big or go home” mood at the moment. LET’S GO.

More media?

Don’t mind if I do! Another thing I enjoy doing for Sci-Fi Month is finding movies I’ve never seen and settling in for a livetweet of my first viewing. This month I hope to squeeze in a few movies! I’m of a mind to rewatch The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi in preparation for The Rise of Skywalker next month, but the first watch feature will also return!

Between refreshing bouts of Star Wars, I’ll be watching Prospect and Outland. It’s bound to be interesting. Join me! The hashtags are #SciFiMonth and whichever movie title applies – so, #TheForceAwakens, #TheLastJedi, #Prospect and #Outland.

There might also be some sprinklings of anime in there throughout the month, as I’m more or less a newcomer to that world – keep an eye on Twitter for more on that!

Ooof! That’s a lot of SF. Best to be getting on with it, I suppose! Oh, and this year imyril and I will be splitting the weekly round-up duties, so look out both here and there for recaps and highlights!

ONWARD.
