#SciFiMonth Read-along: Record of a Spaceborn Few

Signaling the SciFi Month Fleet! Today I’ve got the details of this year’s Read-along, and I am super excited for it. We will be reading Record of a Spaceborn Few, the third volume of the Hugo Award-winning Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers!

From the ground, we stand.
From our ships, we live.
By the stars, we hope.

Centuries after the last humans left Earth, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, a place many are from but few outsiders have seen. Humanity has finally been accepted into the galactic community, but while this has opened doors for many, those who have not yet left for alien cities fear that their carefully cultivated way of life is under threat.

Tessa chose to stay home when her brother Ashby left for the stars, but is forced to question that decision when her position in the Fleet is threatened.

Kip, a reluctant young apprentice, itches for change but doesn’t know where to find it.

Sawyer, a lost and lonely newcomer, is just looking for a place to belong.

And when a disaster rocks this already fragile community, those Exodans who still call the Fleet their home can no longer avoid the question:

What is the purpose of a ship that has reached its final destination?

This Read-along will run in the familiar weekly segment format: Q&As on several chapters a week, throughout the month of November. The schedule is below, but for those who follow the SF/F Read Alongs group on Goodreads, I’ll also be posting the schedule there. Click here for that page!

And if you have (or plan to) officially sign up for the SciFi Month event, you can also add your links to the master schedule!

Right. Without further ado, here is the Read-along schedule:

  • Week 1: Friday 8th November, discussing Prologue & Part 1
  • Week 2: Friday 15th November, discussing Parts 2, 3 & 4
  • Week 3: Friday 22nd November, discussing Parts 5, 6 & 7

I will do my best to have discussion questions posted on Goodreads each Tuesday before the post date, and will also tweet them out from the @SciFiMonth account for anyone who’d prefer to have the discussion on Twitter (date and time TBD, but we’re not strict!). We’ll be using the hashtags #SciFiMonth (in general) and #SpacebornFew, for tweets specific to this read-along.

UPDATE!

I am a terrible person and forgot to mention that I will be co-hosting this Read-along with Jorie @joriestory! All other details remain the same, but she and I will be swapping the hosting duties each week, and will both be attending the Twitter chats as well!

UPDATE THE SECOND!

@imyril made us some awesome banners! There’s even one featuring the absolutely lovely endpaper artwork from the UK print/hardcover edition! So you can use whichever banner pleases you most! (I honestly can’t choose.)

Option #1: The UK cover art banner!

(The quote featured in this is, of course, from the novel itself.)

And here’s option #2, featuring the gorgeous endpaper artwork from the UK special edition, by artist Kiku Hughes!

In the case of this banner, our usual rule applies – you’re welcome to use it if you wish, but please remember to credit this artist!

OK that’s my updating done for the moment. I shall go back to being terribly excited!
