Strange new worlds: SciFi Month 2024

September is here, autumn is creeping in, and your friendly (internet) neighbourhood nerds are planning things. Science fiction things. November isn’t far away, and once again we’ll be dusting off the launchpad for SciFi Month 2024!

What is SciFi Month?

It’s a month-long online event where anyone and everyone who’s into science fiction can come together and celebrate it with fellow nerds. Whether you use a blog, social media, or both, we’ve got room for everyone at the party! On the command deck will be your returning co-hosts: imyril at There’s Always Room For One More, Annemieke at A Dance With Books, Mayri the Bookforager, and myself (Lisa) here at Dear Geek Place.

The resulting crew can read, watch, listen to, play, and create whatever SF-themed media takes their fancy, whether it’s classic or modern, straight SF or a genre mashup. If it has a story to tell, there’s a place for it here – and our door is open to all! Regardless of whether you’re a wide-eyed new recruit or a veteran nerd, there’s a bunk in our spaceship for you.

What’s on?

What isn’t! If past events are anything to go by, you can expect reviews, interviews, book tags, and recommendations galore – and that’s just for starters! As always, we’ll have our SciFi Month Challenge, with daily prompts to get inspiration flowing and conversations starting. Likewise our Friday Five topics are a fun way to get discussions going!

Also as always, there will be Read Alongs and buddy reads to enjoy – my co-host imyril plans to have a buddy read of William Gibson’s classic novel Neuromancer, along with a rewatch of Contact, in honour of Carl Sagan.

I, too, plan to have a Read Along to announce, though those details will be forthcoming in the next update (ie. as soon as I’ve ironed them out).

Joining the crew?

You can join us officially by using our sign-up form and getting access to the Master Schedule where everyone can drop links, for perusal at your leisure. Sign-up is not mandatory, however – you can simply take part through social media if you prefer. Just make sure to tag us on Bluesky (scifimonth.bsky.social) or Instagram (@scifimonth) so we can boost your signals! We’ll be using the tag #SciFiMonth2024 to keep track of things, so please do include this in your posts!

We also have a dedicated Discord server, for the enabling of more in-depth chatter! If you’re not on there yet, send a message on our SciFi Month socials saying you’d like to join and we’ll get an invite sent to you!

Posts mean prizes!

There’s no sign-up deadline, as we welcome early birds and late arrivals alike, but if you do sign up using the form and make a SciFi Month post by November 5th, you’ll be in with a chance of winning some awesome giveaway goodies! Posts made on social media can be counted, though if you’re using Bluesky, a thread is eligible whereas a single skeet is not. Just remember to drop a link in the Master Schedule/tag us on socials so we know where to find your entry!

As for what you can win, that’s in the works at the moment – but look out for future updates for more info on the prizes!

Banners

We have another round of banners and buttons available for this year’s event, with art by Sxwx (not AI-generated, to the best of our knowledge). We’re happy for anyone taking part to use these, provided you don’t make any changes except to resize as needed. Also, please remember to credit the artist!
