Wyrd & Wonder 2026: What’s in store

I am deploying everything comfy and cosy today after Scotland spent all weekend having ALL THE WEATHER, so while I have downtime, let’s talk about all things Wyrd and Wonder!

Banner image is a black background with golden moon phases. Text in the foreground reads "Wyrd and Wonder / Celebrate the fantastic / 1-31 May"

If you missed previous introductions, Wyrd and Wonder is a month-long online event held annually in May, where we celebrate all things fantastical. From books to movies, art to music, we love it all. It’s open to any and all, newcomers and veterans alike, and our only hard rule is Be Kind. We revel in interpretations and fresh perspectives, so come as you are and read/watch what you like – maybe you’ll find something new and even introduce others to your faves!

As May 2026 will be bookended by full moons, we’re making all things lunar-inspired our theme for the month. As always, though, our theme is a loose guideline rather than a rule, so as I noted above you can run as wild with it as you see fit. Do you have a favourite shapeshifter fantasy story or series? Do you love to spread the word of lunar deities? Do you take refuge in the fabled dark side of the moon and prefer your fantasy to do the same? Bring it all to the table!

If you’re into photo prompts, listicle topics and buddy reads, we have all of those too! Here’s a look at our daily prompt challenge for May:

If you’re into this but unsure of the prompts, co-host imyril has you covered with helpful hints for each prompt.

And if you read “listicle” and became the embodiment of that meerkat gif, we have our Fantastic Fives!

The idea for this is pretty simple: you get one theme each week upon which to base a post about five of your favourite books or shows. Typically we share these on Sundays, but you can totally pick any day that works for you. You can also switch up the order of topics if you like!

Transformations: This one is wide open for interpretation – however, save shapeshifters for another post as that will get its own prompt! For this one, perhaps you’ve got favourite retellings of myths or fairy tales, or stories about fantastical changes to people or places under certain conditions.

Moon flowers: This one was inspired by Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon. Give us your favourite stories of lunar deities.

Dark side: The moon isn’t always bright, and some stories are better suited to dark nights and shadowed places…

Shapeshifters: Can’t have a moon theme without a nod to shapeshifters, though why limit it to werewolves? Share your favourite creature features!

Favourites: This one is a round-up style prompt, for sharing your favourite Wyrd and Wonder reads for the month.

It also wouldn’t be Wyrd and Wonder without a buddy read! This year we’ll be getting chatty about Kelly Barnhill’s When Women Were Dragons, and I’m mostly playing my TBR by ear but I will absolutely be joining in with this!

If this sounds like a good time, you can sign up to take part and/or find us on Bluesky and Instagram, as well as in our very own dedicated Discord server. If you’d like an invite, feel free to comment here or find me on Bluesky with your Discord handle. For socials in general, feel free to tag your posts with #WyrdAndWonder so we can find/share/enjoy them. Also, our Master Schedule is up and running for those who want to keep track of who’s posting what and where!

*Deep breath* I think that’s everything covered for now, so all that’s left is to count the days til May 1st!
