Top Ten Tuesday: Better late than never

Time for a list! This week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt is books we meant to read in 2020 but didn’t; I’m going to share some of the ones that I’m still determined to get around to reading, because let’s face it – it’s not the fault of the books that 2020 was … 2020.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish, and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This weekly list feature uses topic prompts to inspire readers/bloggers to share the best (or worst, or most Interesting) of their bookshelves, be it the TBR section, personal favourites or books that have caught their attention.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue & The Near Witch by V.E. Schwab

V.E. Schwab quickly became one of my favourite writers after I fell headfirst into her Shades of Magic trilogy a few years ago, and I fully intend to dive into both of these unread releases as soon as possible in 2021.

The Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo & The House of Sundering Flames by Aliette de Bodard

A couple of long-awaited endings, here. I adored Six of Crows as my introduction to Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse, and I’ll be starting on the rest just as soon as I’ve read the second volume of this duology.

And as for Aliette de Bodard’s Dominion of the Fallen trilogy – this third and final volume demands sufficient (stress-) free time to really sink into it, and it goes without saying that such a thing was in short supply for me in 2020. But I will carve out that time if it kills me this year, because I need to know how this ends!

The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton & The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

I am probably most ashamed of not getting around to The Queens of Innis Lear, of all the books on this list. Tessa Gratton’s prose is one of my favourite forms of comfort, and so I have no excuse for not wrapping myself up in this book last year. But it will happen.

On the other hand, at the time of this post going live I will have already settled in to read The Once and Future Witches. Alix E. Harrow won me over last year with The Ten Thousand Doors of January, and I am super excited to read her latest release!

Beneath the Rising by Premee Mohamed & Drowned Country by Emily Tesh

Two opposites that greatly attracted me, in this pair. Beneath the Rising‘s selling point of sci-fi/horror is not typically a mash-up I’d go for (here’s where I present my Scaredycat Card), but I was intrigued enough by this book’s pitch – and charmed enough by the author on social media – that I decided to go for it. And I will! Just as soon as I’ve finished building the protective fort behind my couch.

Meanwhile, there’s the second volume in the Greenhollow Duology by Emily Tesh, and while I may need to reread Silver in the Wood before I get to this, the novella length plus the delightful hook of folklore/mythology meets queer romance is more than enough to entice this reader. So I expect I’ll get to this one sooner rather than later!

Phoenix Extravagant by Yoon Ha Lee & When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey

Phoenix Extravagant features dragon automata. Dragon. Automata. No, I don’t know what’s taken me so long either.

According to Sarah Gailey, When We Were Magic opens with a certain masculine extremity exploding. I assume it gets wilder from there. Again, I don’t know what’s taken me so long. Hashtag morbid curiosity.

So that’s my ten picks! What do you think? Are any of your favourites on here? Have you been tempted to pick any up? Let me know!
