Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Must Have in 2019

So I fell off this bandwagon a little bit over the last few weeks, but I am climbing back aboard this week to share with you ten of my most anticipated book releases of 2019! (This week’s prompt was a freebie, I am just really super excited about all these new stories!)

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish, and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

TIAMAT’S WRATH by James S.A. Corey

The upcoming volume in the absolutely epic The Expanse series has a hell of a lot of Epic to live up to, if the events of Persepolis Rising were any indication. I have never latched onto a sci-fi/space opera story with quite this much intense enthusiasm before. I am excited and nervous and TERRIFIED and excited about what lies in store for the crew of the Rocinante – oh yeah AND THE FATE OF THE GALAXY.

A MEMORY CALLED EMPIRE by Arkady Martine

If I was to place a bet on Mr Corey having any competition in the space opera field next year, I’d put my money on this one. I’ve never read anything by this author before, but A Memory Called Empire is already getting some favourable attention in my blogger circles, and after looking it up for myself I can understand why! Do go and check it out, and see if you agree…

SOONER OR LATER EVERYTHING FALLS INTO THE SEA by Sarah Pinsker

I’ve been a fan of Sarah Pinsker’s short fiction for a while, so I am 100% here for the release of her first short fiction collection. She also has her debut novel, Song For a New Day, being published by Ace next year, but you can pre-order this collection now, and if short fiction is your cup of tea I thoroughly recommend reading hers!

ATLAS ALONE by Emma Newman

If you’ve been a follower of my reviews since my Over The Effing Rainbow days (good times), then you might just be aware that I’m a bit fond of Emma Newman’s work – in particular, her astoundingly good Planetfall novels. Atlas Alone will be the fourth book in that series (I use that term a bit loosely, as the novels are more of the companion variety – same universe, different stories), and while I may not have read the third book yet, the first two absolutely blew me away. I expect nothing but good (heart-destroying) things from this.

MIDDLEGAME by Seanan McGuire

Look. Any book that can be described as Seanan’s “most ambitious novel to date” is absolutely going to get my attention. And this description right here has given me the worst case of Favourite Author Grabbyhands I’ve ever had. I need it.

MAGIC FOR LIARS by Sarah Gailey

Have you heard of this yet? If not, take a minute and read this. Then I think you’ll understand why it’s on this list.

… Still with me? HOW GOOD DOES THAT SOUND OMG I MUST HAVE IT.

THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone

There are a couple of entries on this list that I absolutely had to include, not only because of how good the story sounds but simply because of the shameless case of starry-eyes I got for the idea of these writers working together. One of them is this windswept and fabulous pairing right here. The author of The Craft Sequence (if you haven’t read that series, please please do, it is marvellous) and the writer of some of the most exquisitely lovely (award-winning!) short fiction I’ve ever read, writing a thing together? And that thing is an epistolary time travel romance? GIVE IT TO ME NOW.

THE HOUSE OF SUNDERING FLAMES by Aliette de Bodard

Indulge me if you will, for a moment, and let’s just give that title the sort of declared-aloud, deeply dramatic gravitas it deserves. THE HOUSE OF SUNDERING FLAMES. Pretty dang glorious, isn’t it? I love it.

Oh yeah, and it’s the third book in Aliette’s incredible Dominion of the Fallen series, which I love wholeheartedly and think you should be reading if you have not done so yet. So go on.

TURNING DARKNESS INTO LIGHT by Marie Brennan

Another series I spent a lot of time falling head over heels in love with over the last year or so was Marie Brennan’s The Memoirs of Lady Trent, so upon hearing that there will be a sequel/companion novel to that series coming out next year, I immediately nearly hurt myself flailing in sheer joy. Then I stuck it firmly on my wish list and will now be waiting (very im)patiently for its August release…

THE VELA by Yoon Ha Lee, Becky Chambers, Rivers Solomon & SL Huang

Remember how I said there were a couple of entries here that earned their place due to the sheer SFF star power involved alone? And then I heard more and it turns out the story also sounds amazingly damned good? Meet the second of those entries. This upcoming epic sci-fi serial from Serial Box has me just about tied in knots, I am so excited for it. THAT TEAM OF WRITERS, YOU GUYS. AUGH. Why can’t I have it now?!

So that’s my list! What’s on yours? Share your wants/needs/dire cravings in the comments. I’ll read them while I rock back and forth in a corner, willing the new year to come faster.
